In the never-ending quest to find new and unique ways to help preserve the environment, one group of designers has thrust themselves to the head of the class with the concept of the one-size-fits-most battery cell.

The A to D Battery, as it’s so cleverly called, utilizes Memory Foam technology to allow users to essentially squeeze the battery to any size they may need between AA and D. Once secure in the device, the battery then expands to fill the appropriate space.

A very cool concept, indeed, except for one minute thing: the energy cell is size AA. This means that if you’re trying to obtain enough juice of a full-sized flashlight or any other D-cell-sized gadget, you’re going to be rather disappointed when it runs out within the first five minutes or so. They are also rechargeable, but that might not be saying much when you have a set of batteries that may or may not last through the night.

I think the main point here is the fact that people are making honest efforts to cut down on the consumption and subsequent waste that comes with having to buy multiple sets of disposable batteries over time. Perhaps there will come a time when design is perfected, but until then, we can at least keep our hopes up for a brighter future with ideas like the A to D Battery.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill has been nothing short of a disaster. Politicians pointing the finger of blame at other politicians. British Petroleum making sure that if they go down, they’ll make sure they take as many of their constituents with them.

This spill has put many a citizen at a disadvantage from the east coast of Texas to possibly the Carolinas and beyond once it’s all said and done, but there is a larger portion of the country, and the world, that may never feel the true impact of one of the most disastrous environmental catastrophes of our time.

Fortunately, I try to make it a point to include as many of brothers and sisters of this wide world of ours in everything that I do. An environmentally conscious (and emotionally jarring) website called, ItItWasMyHome.com, has taken up the task of creating a geo-location-based script that superimposes the most current area map of the oil spill onto your current location or any one that you type in the search fields.

Now, people in New York, Beijing, Paris, London, Los Angeles and the world over can catch a what-if scenario as to what the oil spill would look like if there city was the epicenter.

Granted, this is not going to do the hell of a lot to reverse the effects of the spill, but this can at least be one step towards heightened activism on a more global scale.

Food Inc. is a documentary that seeks to uncover the corruption and mass production methods of providing food for people of the United States. Anyone who’s familiar with Eric Schlosser’s book “Fast Food Nation” will undoubtedly get a jolt out of this film.

The doc, for the most part, does a very good job of sticking to the bare facts and nothing more. I’ve never been the biggest fan of Michael Moore films, so I tend to be a tad bit more critical when I see a documentary start to embellish more than report.

The most poignant part of this film came when they did a synopsis of the Monsano Group, an organization that is credited with creating a patented, pesticide-resistant seed, only to find out that the pesticide that they are resistant to is Roundup (a product of the Monsano Group). It was then reported that Monsano was sending private investigators to farms across the country to insure that subsidized farmers weren’t using a seed that was unapproved by the group.

A chicken warehouse that stores up to 5,000 hens at a time.

Many people warned me that that I was going to leave this documentary as a newfound vegetarian, but that simply wasn’t the case. Granted, I may never visit another fast food joint again, but I feel like you have to be naive to think that mass production techniques have not trickled into the way we get our daily bread.

The only thing I wish the documentary would have expounded more on was the hypocrisy of the organic movement and how even they tried the justify the use of assembly line-like methods to further expand their business, but I believe the point of this movie was to do more than just play devil’s advocate; it’s real purpose was to show that humans, at one time, relied and flourished on self-sustainability. This is not the case now.

We’ve become so complacent with the status quo that we fail to see that we’re slowly killing ourselves and future generations with the way we consume our food.

Food Inc. is a great film for anyone our there who needs a compelling reason as to why they should change the way they see, purchase and eat food.

Spotted just the other day on Uncluttered White Spaces, the innovative people over at The Deli Garage have come up with an amazing way to combine art and this country’s undying love of food into one of the most contagiously creative products I’ve seen in a very long time.

Introducing Esslack Food Spray! A 100% edible, spray-paint-like substance that comes in gold and silver varieties. The concept itself is ingenious and could potentially have a great deal of shelf life if it catches on with the right target audiences (read: eccentric designers and hipsters).

The gold variation of Esslack spray paint in action.

The idea was created in Germany along side the uber haute Korefe agency. Notwithstanding, the can art is pretty damned imaginative, too.

Now, I don’t foresee an increase in foodie gangs tagging four-course dinners from here to Momofuku, but I’ll bet my hard-earned blogging dollars that a ballsy group of rouge chefs out there will make sure that spray painted foods and garnishes will become something of a signature for their most prolific dishes in the near future.

The edible paint also comes in silver.

Until then, feel free to pick up a can or two of the stuff yourself. Go nuts with it! It’ll be the the perfect opportunity to show all of your friends how progressive and artistically ahead of the curve you are.

I’m a sucker for outlandish designs for simple, everyday items and this calendar is absolutely no exception to the rule.

Yes…I said calendar.

The good folks over at STIHL–yeah, the same people who are most known for powered lawn care tools–pulled out all the stops when they introduced their Autumn 2010 Falling Leaf Calendar. Fully automated, this baby features a day-to-day format that mimics falling leaves for each day that passes.

Granted, it’s only for the autumn months, but I find it very hard to believe that STIHL and their partner design collective, Euro RSCG Germany, won’t create a calendar that includes all the months of the year. They need love, too.

Check out the video to see this thing in action.

Sintient is a term we coined from the word “sentient” as the awareness of sin. Inspired by John Perkins Confessions of an economic hitman Sintient speaks specifically about our awareness of the sins and injustices of an aristocratic corporate America. The sintient machine is a term referring to the corporatocracy driven government that is aware of there sin and have gradually taken the reigns of our democracy.

The concept of the sintient machine is simple. Two core points create the elixir of their shady intentions; One Corporations often find their interest entangled with government affairs. Two, Political parties and political party candidates rely heavily on financial support from the major bread winning corporations. These two ingredients create an elixir of shady contributions and questionable political decisions that are typically tailored to fit the interest of the corporatocracy above those of the common people.

Also adding fuel to the sintient machine are many “former” corporate executives are appointed in high positions within our government often still remaining in cahoots with there former affiliates looking after their best interest. Generally after serving their term in office and proving loyalty to a cause they are handsomely rewarded with lucrative offers from the same entities their decisions benefited. This is known as the “revolving door” concept and can lead to a regulatory capture of an industry or sector.

When we take in consideration that the richest 1 percent globally own about 40% of the world and majority of these individuals have ties to the wealthiest corporations which in return are the major contributors to our political campaigns, it’s easy to see there really is no secret who is running the world. How can we expect our politicians to make ethical choices for the people when there sovereignty doesn’t rely on public opinion but on corporate contributions?

With that being said, let’s now take a look at our nations budget…

6% Goes to our health, 9% goes to education, training, employment and social services, 3% goes to our environment while an astounding 52% goes to war and national defense. What this reveals is a corporatocracy influenced government strengthened from a military-industrial complex that has forced our nation into a permanent war driven economy first predicted by president Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The corporatocracy is the dominant force in today’s society much like the church, the monarchy, and the communist party in other times and places. The only difference is that a corporation is required by law to put the interest of stock holders above all other interest. Even the greater good of the people. So corporations have one common goal … increase bottom line at all cost.

As injust as all this sounds the brutal reality is there is one to blame. Yourself. You are the fuel for the aristocrats sintient machine and have unintentionally provided fuel for it’s takeover. Clever advertising has gave these entities friendly faces that we can relate to on an emotional level hiding the true shadow body of these conglomerates. To affect change we must stop supporting these entities for cheap prices and convenience sake. Together we take a few small sacrifices to ensure a brighter immediate and long term future for our civilization. In a future article we will discuss the best methods for this sort of action and specific exploits that will help empower the individuals rise against.
